Building a canoe birch bark without ….? Birch bark

I live in a region where the type of bark birch (papyfiera betullae) for Canoebuilding birch bark does not grow, birch and others are not suitable for this purpose.Looking forward on a construction with materials I can gather and generally respecting the native way of building my next question. What could I use even in non-natural materials, build me a boat that looks, feels, …., as a canoe of birch bark, but when the shell is not made of birch bark. peel of others as spruce, beech. … or birch bark painted existing polyester, Kevlar, Royalex … Modern canoes are not taken into account. I wonder if anyone of you has an idea that the material could be used that could replace or birch bark and still offers a close look at the Nice one from birch bark. At the same time, a possible substitute the spruce root lashing is welcome too.
